ARTIST STATEMENT

This work is created to illustrate the colour and the intensity of our modern life. It is easy to be inspired by the everyday events of a decaying urban landscape or find refuge in the complex and sometimes savage human actions on display all around us. All that glitters isn’t gold but that is who we are and I try to show the shimmer in the debris.

Even though the work is abstract, I assign historic or topical narratives with the simplicity of shapes and colour. The wood itself is also a character in the play. Much of the wood is salvaged or purchased from a deconstruction company.

The grain, colour, thickness, age, size or shape can aid in telling a story. This is the reason I switched from canvas to wood fifteen years ago, sometimes going on a search for a certain piece of wood can be part of the adventure. I have rescued pieces of wood from certain death and made some of my favourite works upon them.

Once I obtain a piece of wood, I cut it to size or leave the original shape. I carve out the picture with a knife and then re-sand the whole piece. I mix oils and colour the blocks. Once the colours are finished, the carved lines are filled in with solid black oil paint.

I have always been a political person and I have expressed my frustrations and great love through my art. Much of my work is about subject matter that hasn't yet been resolved. Other work is historical, literal or personal.

The most I can hope for is that my work will stir someone, if only for the love of abstract colour and the natural beauty of storied, carved wood.

Thank you for looking.
